The name

On the name Euxinus

Pontus Euxinus is the Latin name of the Black Sea, taken from the Greek Pontos Euxeinos — “the hospitable sea”, “the kindly sea”. Antiquity also preserves an older form, Pontos Axeinos, “the inhospitable sea”: sailors who knew its storms chose to address it by the good name, as one addresses a host on whom the rest of the journey depends.

For our foundation the name is a working programme. Hospitality towards the cultural heritage of the Carpathian–Pontic region, openness towards those who seek, and the patience of long research — these are the measures we have taken upon ourselves.
